So, swap your post-holiday blues for a new color palette – as well as many of the cool new gadgets, accents and accoutrements – sure to revitalize the living space around you.

Now, let's take a closer look at some of the hottest trends in the home décor and remodeling realm. And remember, let the trend guide you – not define you. After all, it’s your home!

Color It Coral

Pantone recently announced its 2019 Color of the Year: Living Coral. Describing it as “animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone,” Pantone chose this pinkish-orange shade, found in multicolored reefs, brilliant sunrises and sunsets, to be prominent for paint colors, apparel and interiors. Read more about it here.

What’s a more fitting place for a color so fresh and full of life than the powder room or bathroom? Whether it is incorporated into tile, knick-knacks, flooring, towels or towel racks, Living Coral can bring a new energy to the space.

Make A Splash with Your Kitchen’s Backsplash

Speaking of backsplashes, this often overlooked – but important working part of any kitchen – is sure to be a focal point of kitchen overhauls in 2019.

In addition to practical protection for the walls above the food prep and cooking space, backsplashes can improve the overall look of the kitchen. In fact, this will be the year many will reach for stars and take the backsplash to the ceiling.

Homeowners are encouraged to experiment with a combination of patterns, colors, and textures to creating a stunning background for your work area. Larger subway tiles, mirrored and metallic finishes, patterns (such as chevron, herringbone, Moroccan fish scale), and marble slabs. Switching out a kitchen’s backsplash is a chance to introduce a little personal style to one of the most popular spot in one’s household.

Furnishings, Graded on a Curve

According to the Director of Style at Modsy, an influential interior design service, “Hard lines are being traded in for softer curves.” In Modsy’s 2019 trends preview, they note that hard lines are being replaced by softer curves, particularly on sofas, but also on armchairs and even beds.

Designers and homeowners are finding that curved and kidney-shaped sofas worked well in small rooms, providing versatility and visual appeal.

While curved furnishings have a ’60s retro feel, they are a welcomed change to the lines of an overly traditional, masculine room. The simple addition of a soft-curved chair, a pop-art atomic space age sofa, mod bullet planters, or a kidney-shaped table can break up the routine and expected.

For Ceilings, the Sky’s the Limit

It’s finally time to raise the roof on the look of your ceiling. This space has long gone unnoticed – but for good reason. It’s been routinely left alone. With the right visual impact, however, you can enhance an entire room by showing your ceiling some attention to design.

Whether brightened with a coat of paint, wallpapered, paneled, or smartly decorated, that open space above your head can have a lot more going for it. In fact, a reimagined ceiling can make a room appear larger, brighter and, best of all, more memorable than any common wall could.

Multifunctional Furniture

For those who consider themselves minimalists, reside in a limited amount of space, or just need transformative options from time to time, multifunctional furniture is fast-becoming the home decorating trend that’s as versatile as it is fanciful. But multifunctional furniture isn’t just about affordability or maximizing space, though those are both great reasons for buying into this trend.

One of the main reasons for incorporating multifunctional furniture pieces into a home is practicality. Combining a sleeping and living area in a small space just makes sense. Take the classic Murphy bed, for instance. Incorporating a Murphy bed into a home office allows it to double for a guest bedroom, making the most of a home’s square footage without breaking the bank. On a smaller scale, introducing an ottoman that doubles as a storage cabinet may be the cure for clutter.

The key to choosing multifunctional furniture is to start thinking about the many ways a piece can provide functionality as well as minimalism to the look of a home.
